About Captain Tim
Captain Tim SailQuest Director Instructor

Captain Tim McMahon grew up in the sailing community of Maine, USA. As a licensed US Merchant Marine 200 Ton Master and fully qualified IYT Instructor, Captain Tim has lived and worked on the water for most of his life. Following many years as a busy charter and yacht delivery captain in and around Hawaiian/Pacific waters, Tim spent 7 years living aboard the his own classic yacht “Houhere” and cruising the oceans and waterways of the world.

Settling in Thailand in 1997, Tim operated a live-aboard sail/dive charter company embarking on adventure voyages along the Malacca Straits, Thailand & Malaysian coastal waters and pioneering live aboard cruising into Myanmar and the exotic Andaman Islands. In 2004, Captain Tim partnered up with another local sailing company as operations manager for a fleet of 10 active charter yachts.

This diverse and hands-on experience has provided him with the genuine knowledge of yachts, world cruising and the live-aboard lifestyle which he enthusiastically passes on to SailQuest Sailing School students.

Now, having logged over 250,000 nautical miles, professionally skippered dozens of yachts in charter, worldwide yacht delivery and live-aboard cruising, taken thousands of people out sailing and given personal yachting instruction to more the 1,500 sailing school students, Captain Tim’s SailQuest Sailing School is uniquely suited to teaching new sailors what they really need to know to get the most from the yachting experience.

When it comes time to “Learn to Sail”, there is no substitute for on-the-water experience. With Captain Tim and SailQuest, you can be confident that you will receive the best value for your “Learn to Sail” time and money.

In his own words:
"At SailQuest, we take a personal interest in every student and make a big effort not only to teach them how to sail, but also how to use that knowledge to advance their sailing goals, whether that may be yacht chartering, crewing on a world cruising yacht or being able to make informed decisions when it comes to yacht ownership.

SailQuest students have a solid understanding of yachts and the realities of the sea and therefore are able to get the most from the yachting scene and lifestyle."

About NauticEd Online

About NauticEd Online Courses
SailQuest Sailing School is a Flagship Partner School with NauticEd Online Sailing Courses. Click the link at the top of the page to visit the NauticEd site.

The NauticEd Certification takes advantage of the power of the internet. The NauticEd online logbook helps students track their actual time spent on the water, which is where real hands-on learning takes place. The more time spent on the water, the more experienced and capable a sailor will be. This is why for example the United States Coast Guard requires 1 years worth of time spent on boats as well as extensive theory test out before one can attain a USCG professional captain's license.

NauticEd has taken a similar theory PLUS experience approach and also added in an optional proficiency test by an accredited school:

Students graduate through the Ranks by the theory courses they have taken and passed.

Students move through the "Levels" of Rank by the experience they have gained on the water

Students attend SailQuest Sailing School for the Verified Proficeincy endorsements .

NauticEd was founded by Captain Grant Headifen, USCG 50 Ton Master, who is widely known as the father of fractional use of sailboats. In doing this, Headifen recognized that more than 50% of people getting into sailing had very little experience and needed guidance in the best ways to get sailing education. And even the people with experience were hungry for more advanced learning. Thus the opportunity to serve the sailing community through a high tech high touch approach was born. The result? - NauticEd!

Sailing instruction on the internet is certainly available but it is spread wide and thin while the quality varies from amateur videos on youtube to good instruction - but perhaps just on one topic. NauticEd is a one stop quality shop which includes a branded and recognized certification that students can use forever.

In addition, the trend in sailing is to go to larger and larger (and more comfortable) sailboats. Yet very little sailing instruction focuses on this. Many certification companies worldwide start students on small boats and expect them to extrapolate their skills to larger boats. NauticEd focuses specifically on teaching people to sail on larger modern sailboats.
